"A good candidate for a damaged cist. There is one long slab still in situ which is orientated 120/300 degrees. Other stones are rather jumbled and some look shattered, so I believe at some time it must have received a hit or near miss from an artillery piece - there are quite a few old shell holes on this hillside."

An inner ring of tall slabs was probably a cist. A flat slab at the centre may be the capstone. Incorrect grid reference (6438 8263) in Turner, & SMR give number SX 68 SW/140 for this. Butler gives reference 6348 8258.

Comments
"An inner ring of slabs surrounds the cist, only one side slab of which remains ... " If the stone, which is central in the cairn, is a sideslab then the orientation is unusual.

Comments
All four slabs, and displaced capstone. Originally double, the smaller one, 0.96 x 0.53m & directed S 70° E, was removed to Torquay museum in 1880, and again moved to the Jack Wigmore Garden at the High Moorland Visitor Centre, Princetown (5901 7346), on the 9th - 10th March 2004.
